Galleries in Gastown carry Northwest Coast native art, including cedar carvings, ceremonial masks, paintings, and jewelry. Some also display Inuit soapstone and whalebone carvings from the far north. Fine art galleries carrying paintings, drawings, and sculptures by local artists can be found on Granville Island and along Vancouver’s “Gallery Row” in the South Granville neighborhood.
The Vancouver Art Gallery has permanent displays of paintings by Canadian artists, including Emily Carr, one of British Columbia’s best known painters. The Vancouver Art Gallery also hosts temporary exhibits and installations by contemporary Canadian artists as well as traveling art collections from around the world. Vancouver’s numerous live theater venues include The Vancouver Playhouse, the province’s biggest regional theater, and the popular Arts Club Theatre on Granville Island.
